Ana Hifo
Director and Licensed Immigration Adviser
With over ten years of experience at Immigration New Zealand (INZ), Ana brings a rare depth of knowledge and leadership in immigration policy, operations and client service. Her career at INZ reflects consistent growth, driven by strong analytical ability, integrity and a passion for helping people navigate complex immigration processes.
Ana began her journey at INZ in 2014 as a Documentation Officer, where she was responsible for various administrative functions to support Immigration Officers with application processing. This role provided her with a strong foundation in immigration processes, compliance requirements and operational systems.
In 2017, Ana was promoted to the Immigration Officer role, where she was entrusted with assessing and deciding on a wide range of temporary visa applications. She specialised in Essential Skills Work Visas, ensuring each application met the policy requirements while balancing risk and fairness. Her responsibilities included conducting verification checks, assessing labour market conditions, liaising with employers and drafting complex decision letters which needed to be conveyed to clients and their representatives. Ana consistently met performance targets and was recognised for her high accuracy, sound judgement and quality decision-making.
Due to her strong technical capability and leadership potential, Ana was selected to join the Technical Advisor team. In this role, she provided expert guidance to Immigration Officers across a variety of complex immigration matters. She delivered training, clarified policy intent, reviewed high-risk decisions and contributed to process improvement initiatives. Ana became a key point of contact for specific markets, escalations and was instrumental in fostering consistency and quality across teams.
In 2021, Ana was promoted to the Immigration Manager role, where she led and supported over 40 Immigration Officers across multiple teams in both the temporary and residence spaces. She was responsible for workforce planning, performance management, coaching and mentoring and ensuring operational targets were met. Ana worked closely with leadership teams to implement organisational priorities, improve service delivery and support staff wellbeing. Her leadership style is known for being values-driven, empathetic and focused on continuous improvement.
Throughout her INZ career, Ana was the recipient of multiple leadership and excellence awards, recognising her outstanding contribution to team culture, her commitment to client-focused service and her ability to inspire and support others. She remains highly regarded across the wider Immigration New Zealand network for her professionalism, technical expertise, and ethical leadership.
